Multivitamin Supplements: frequently asked questions
How do I choose between a men's, women's or general multivitamin?
Gender-specific formulas adjust nutrients like iron, which women need more of before menopause, while men's versions usually contain little or none. A general daily multivitamin suits anyone who simply wants basic cover.
Tablets, chewables or gummies: which form should I pick?
Tablets usually pack the most nutrients per serving. Chewables and gummies are easier if you dislike swallowing pills, but they often contain sugar and fewer minerals, so compare the labels before deciding.
Can I take a multivitamin with my other supplements?
Usually yes, but check for overlap. If you also take separate zinc, vitamin D or iron, add up the amounts from both labels so you don't double up. If you take regular medicines, ask your doctor first.
What time of day is best to take a multivitamin?
Take it with a meal, ideally breakfast or lunch. Food helps the fat-soluble vitamins absorb, and some people find B vitamins a little stimulating late in the evening.
How to choose a multivitamin
- Match it to the person. Women's formulas usually add iron and folic acid; men's formulas often have little or no iron; 50+ formulas focus on vitamin D, B12 and eye nutrients; kids' formulas use child-sized doses.
- Pick a form you will take daily. Tablets give the most nutrients per rupee, capsules are easy to swallow, and gummies or chewables suit people who dislike pills.
- Check the dose per serving. "One a day" formulas are convenient; two- or three-tablet formulas spread the nutrients across the day.
- Look for extras you actually need, such as omega-3 or probiotics, rather than paying for long ingredient lists.
